The rally attracted a host of European stars, in Group B cars, that year including the likes of Fabrizio Tabaton (replacing Miki Biasion who was called up for the New Zealand Rally at the last minute) in a works Martini Lancia Delta S4 running on Michelin tyres, Patrick Snijers in the Tre Gazzelle prepared Bastos Texaco Lancia Rally 037, Gaby Goudezeune - Alfa Romeo GTV6, Bruno Saby driving Michele Mouton's Peugeot Deutschland 205 T16, Marc Duez - Schmidt Motorsport run Belga Metro 6R4, Jean Ragnotti in a Group A Renault 11 Turbo, Guy Colsoul - Bastos Texaco Opel Manta 400, Robert Droogmans - Team Belga / RAS Sport Ford RS200, the most spectacular driver on Ypres '86 was Paul Lietaer in his Opel Manta 400, Thierry Reginster - Alfa Romeo GTV6, Ian Donaldson - MG Metro 6R4, Philippe Touren - Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, Pascal Gaban - Porsche 911 SC RS, Mario Panontin - Tre Gazzelle Lancia Rally 037 and Mauro Pregliasco - Tre Gazzelle (didn't run in West colours) Lancia Rally 037.
Other drivers also featured include the late James Prochowski in the UB40 sponsored Nissan 240RS, John Bosch - Rothmans Audi quattro A2, Andrew Wood - Opel Manta 400, Bernard Mathon in the ex-Auriol Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, Francis Vincent - Lancia Rally 037, Rene Develay in the ex-Chatriot Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, Christophe Spiliotis - Volta Lancia Rally 037, Marian Bublewicz and Janus Serzla both in FSO Polonez 2000Cs, Bernard Munster - Group N Audi 80 quattro, another event entertainer was Marc Soulet in his Porsche 911 SC, Patricia Bertapelle in a PTS Strasbourg run Peugeot 205 T16, Stig-Olov Walfridsson - Group A Volvo 240 Turbo, etc.
Classic stages used were, for example; St. Juliaan, Hollebeke, Kemmel, Loker, Reningelst and Kemmelberg.
