1986 was a very difficult year for rallying worldwide and the British Open Rally Championship was no exception. It would prove to be the final year for the 4WD Group B beasts in rallying and they left their mark in the Open Championship.
Mark Lovell picked up the championship that year through consistent points scoring in his Ford RS 200, and he didn't even win a round that year! He should have won the Ulster though, but FISA imposed average speed restrictions prevented him as most of the stages were "cleaned", even though he was fastest on most tests.
The RS200 was always plagued by gearbox problems, the bugbear of the car, but Lovell always got the car home. This was the second year in a row Lovell had won a championship without winning a round as the year previous he won the British National championship recording the same feat.
